Can Pilates build muscle?

Pilates can challenge muscles and contribute to strength. Whether it provides enough stimulus for muscle growth depends on the exercises, resistance, effort and starting point. An exercise may challenge a beginner but add little demand for an experienced exerciser. The name Pilates therefore does not tell the whole story.

When might you need more resistance?

As an exercise becomes easier, further development may require more challenge. You might adjust resistance, repetitions or the variation. Progress gradually while maintaining control. A more difficult balance position does not necessarily increase loading for the muscle you want to train.

Pilates and strength training can complement each other

Pilates can be an enjoyable way to practise movement control, trunk strength and body awareness. Focused training with weights can make it easier to increase resistance for particular muscles. If muscle growth is your main goal, discuss a suitable combination of Pilates and strength training with your coach.
