Why do I have less energy since menopause?
Lower energy and fatigue are commonly reported during the menopause transition. Hormonal changes may play a role, but sleep disruption, stress, mood, nutrition, activity and other health conditions can all contribute.
What can make you feel so tired?
Oestrogen interacts with several systems involved in brain function and energy metabolism. At the same time, changes in mood, sleep and body composition can influence how energetic you feel.
Fatigue during menopause rarely has one single cause. Looking at sleep, stress, food, movement and your overall health gives a more useful picture.
How do hot flushes and sleep problems affect energy?
Night sweats and hot flushes can repeatedly interrupt sleep. Even if you spend enough hours in bed, fragmented sleep can leave you tired, less focused and less resilient the next day.
Poor sleep can also influence appetite and glucose regulation, making energy levels feel less stable.
Why can weight management feel harder when you are tired?
When you are exhausted, everyday movement and exercise may decrease, while appetite and food choices can change. Age-related muscle loss can also reduce energy expenditure.
Very restrictive dieting can make fatigue worse and may make it harder to maintain muscle. Adequate nutrition and strength training are therefore important even when weight management is a goal.
Which foods can support energy?
A varied eating pattern with enough protein, fibre, complex carbohydrates and healthy fats can support steady energy and muscle maintenance.
- Protein: tofu, tempeh, seitan, edamame, beans, lentils, chickpeas, nuts and seeds.
- Fibre-rich carbohydrates: oats, whole grains, potatoes, vegetables, fruit and pulses.
- Magnesium-rich foods: leafy greens, nuts, seeds, pulses and whole grains.
- Phytoestrogen-containing foods: soya foods, flaxseed and pulses.
- Alcohol: consider limiting it if it affects your sleep or energy.
bbb food coaching can help you connect your own eating pattern to your energy and goals.
Does exercise help when you already feel exhausted?
Regular physical activity can improve fitness, sleep and wellbeing over time. Strength training is particularly useful for maintaining muscle, while walking, Yoga and other lower-intensity movement can be a good starting point on low-energy days.
If you are very fatigued, build up gradually rather than assuming a harder workout is always better. At bbb, training can be adapted to your level and how you feel.
When should you see your GP about fatigue?
Do not automatically attribute persistent or severe fatigue to menopause. Speak to your GP if it substantially affects daily life, suddenly worsens or is accompanied by symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest pain, palpitations, unexplained weight change or persistent low mood.
Other conditions, including thyroid problems, anaemia and nutrient deficiencies, can also cause fatigue and may need investigation.
