Strength training and plant-based eating

Eating plant-based is not only a sustainable choice for our planet, but it also offers numerous health benefits and can be a power source for anyone engaged in strength training or pursuing an active lifestyle. With the right knowledge and approach, a plant-based diet can provide all the essential nutrients needed for muscle building, recovery, and overall well-being. Thus, strength training and plant-based eating make a great combination.

Strength training and plant-based eating: protein!

Proteins are the building blocks of our muscles, and the concern that plant sources might not provide enough protein is a common misconception. However, there are numerous plant-based protein sources, such as lentils, beans, tofu, tempeh, seitan, pea protein, and nuts, which can greatly contribute to the daily protein requirement. A varied plant-based diet can easily meet the protein needs of even the most demanding athletes.

In addition to proteins, the intake of sufficient carbohydrates and healthy fats is essential. Carbohydrates, such as whole grains, fruits, and vegetables, provide the necessary energy during workouts. Fats, especially those from avocados, nuts, seeds, and olive oil, contribute to recovery and support overall health.

Micronutrients also play a crucial role in a plant-based diet for athletes. Iron, calcium, zinc, vitamin B12, and omega-3 fatty acids are all important for optimal performance and recovery. Fortunately, there are many plant-based sources and supplements available to meet these needs.

Hydration

Hydration should not be underestimated; water is crucial for all bodily functions, including muscle function and recovery. Increasing the intake of water and hydrating foods, such as fruits and vegetables, can help stay hydrated.
